On July1, people across the country will be celebrating a big number—150. But for an Albertan couple, not only will they be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, they also have a 150th milestone of their own to celebrate.
43-year-old Bobbi Skrynyk and 45-year-old Craig Skrynyk are training for the High River Half marathon, which they will complete on Canada’s 150th Birthday.
Bobbi and Craig have been married since 1999 and completed their first half marathon together in 2006. The following year, they ran in two half marathons and it continued to grow from there to the point where in 2014, Craig ran 12 half marathons and Bobbi ran 13.
“Our original goal as a couple was to run 50 half marathons before we turned 50,” Bobbi says. “But we blew our goal out of the water so we set a new goal—100 half marathons before 50.”
But when they realized it would soon be Canada’s 150th Birthday, an even more ambitious goal was set to run their 150th combined half marathon on July 1, 2017.
“It’s been a lot of coordinating over the last year to make it work,” Bobbi says.
For many people, running just one half marathon is a huge feat, but for Bobbi and Craig, they say they keep going back for more because of the huge sense of accomplishment they feel when they complete a race.
“And it also doesn’t hurt that I allow myself some treats because I’ve burned extra calories,” Bobbi says, adding that she even has a headband that reads: “I run so I can eat.”
This will be Bobbi’s second time running in the High River Half and Craig’s first time because he was sick last year
Bobbi says she’s really looking forward to it because she loves how beautiful the race route is, and also loves the medals we give out, saying she’s “all about the bling.”
So what’s next for this ambitious, goal-crushing couple?
“Canada Day will be both of our 75th half marathons, so in the next four years we plan to do another 25 to have completed 100 before Craig turns 50,” Bobbi says. “After that I think we will slow down a bit on the number halves we do in a year and maybe add more destination runs into our travels.”
The High River Half run committee is so excited that Bobbi and Craig have chosen our race to complete such a huge milestone. We can’t wait to cheer them on at the finish line and hope you will come cheer them on too!
